The Beretta 92 (also Beretta 96 and Beretta 98) is a series of semi-automatic pistols designed and manufactured by Beretta Gardone val Trompia, of Brescia, Italy. It was designed in 1972 and production of many variants of different calibres continues today. It is famous for having replaced the 11.43mm M1911 pistol as the standard sidearm of the United States Armed Forces in 1985, in the form of the M9 pistol.
